Localisation Listening Test

You are invited to take part in an MSc Audio Production research project at the University of Salford. This test investigates how different stereo recording techniques influence perceived source direction.

You will listen to 20 short anonymised audio recordings through headphones. For each recording, indicate the direction from which the sound appears to originate by clicking on the head diagram.

There are no right or wrong answers. Please select the direction where you personally perceive the sound to be located.

The diagram shows the full space around the head. You may select any position on the diagram. Please choose the direction where the sound appears to come from, even if this is different from the position you expect.

Instructions

Please complete the test:

• Using headphones, not loudspeakers.
• In a quiet environment.
• At a comfortable listening level that remains approximately the same throughout the test.
• On a computer or tablet with a sufficiently large screen, rather than a mobile phone.
• Without discussing your responses with another person.

You may replay each recording before selecting your response. The test should take approximately 10–15 minutes.

Participant information and consent

Participation is voluntary. You may stop participating at any time before submitting your responses by closing the browser window. You do not need to provide a reason.

Your responses will be used anonymously for an MSc Audio Production dissertation at the University of Salford. Do not enter your name, email address, student number or other identifying information. Because responses are anonymous, it may not be possible to identify and remove an individual response after it has been submitted.
